Become a Member of the Museum

You are invited to join the New South Wales Rail Transport Museum. The Rail Transport Museum was established in 1962 by a group of people interested in preserving steam engines for future generations to see and enjoy. To-day there are over 2,200 members, mostly from New South Wales but some living interstate and overseas.

RTM is a not for profit company registered with the Australian Securities and Investment Commission. Donations are tax deductible.

RTM is governed by a Board of Directors elected annually by the members, and administered by a volunteer management committee with day to day operations carried out by a small number of full time staff. Volunteer members are also involved in day to day management of specific sections of the organization.

Railway museums at Thirlmere and Valley Heights have on display a large variety of heritage rolling stock that has been passed to the care of the RTM by the State's railway authorities.

As well as the two museums, RTM operates classic rail heritage trains throughout the year to popular tourist destinations, operates a steam hauled heritage train between Picton and Buxton and maintains the Picton to Buxton railway line as a heritage railway.

How can I help the Museum's work?

Participation in our activities and volunteering to help our work are both tangible and rewarding ways of helping the Museum maintain its viability and to achieve its goals.

Our volunteer workers enjoy the challenge and fulfilment of hard and rewarding work that benefits our rail heritage for current and future generations. Volunteering provides a personal satisfaction in a job well done, and the camaraderie of others similarly motivated and interested.

Members are welcome to participate in a small or large way in the running of the RTM. There is a wide range of tasks and activities in which our members are involved as volunteers, including rewarding activities such as locomotive and carriage restoration and maintenance, on-board train staff (waiters and passenger attendants), tour booking staff, museum guides, journalists, and retail book sales staff.
